Already busy with turnpike traffic, the railway's arrival encouraged more hotels, such as the Royal Station Hotel at the bottom of the street.
This street is now pedestrianised.
The octagonal building standing in the centre of the high street was erected in 1609 as a market from which the famous locally-produced broadcloth was sold.
The carefully-pollarded lime trees along both sides of this north to south street help to shade the frontages of the varied shops and other retail establishments which flourish here.
The Union Baptist Chapel in Easton Street was built in 1845, designed by Octavius Jordan.
He also built the station - a great achievement for a man who could barely write his own name.

The spacious northern end of the High Street, with its central water garden and carefully tended flowerbeds, marks the area where the market hall stood until 1853.
The brick gateway, with its barely discernible royal cipher, is all that remains.
