Nostalgic memories of Wallington's local history

Share your own memories of Wallington and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My memories of Collingwood began with my very first day there, in 1948, when I was l was left alone in a big empty hall, not knowing what to do! Eventually one of the teachers came in, saying crossly, " Why are you crying?" and not listening to the answer! I believe I ended up having a good education (maybe being scared all the time helped !) and my favourite memory of the school was in June 1952, ...see more
We moved to a listed property on Manor Road a couple of years ago and would love to know more about the history of the area and road. Any memories, maps or photos would be hugely welcome!
So many hours of reading here in this library. The children's section was in the main door and to the right served by the 2 windows shown on the ground floor. I recall taking out every Arthur Ransome title and many others. I was fascinated by the section of the Surrey Iron Railway displayed in the gardens also to the right of the pool against the boundary wall. I wonder if its still ...see more

I lived at 138, Stanley Road, Carshalton-on-the-Hill. Amongst my fellow classmates were Anthony Dallison, Jeffrey Biden, Christopher Golbourne, Clive White, Christopher Nulty, Paul Whitfield, Richard Barnatt, ...see more

I went to WCGS for boys from 1959 - 66. I never really appreciated the school until just before I left for Reading University - made possible by some brilliant teachers particularly Frank Mitchell and Michael Gainsbury despite my suffering glandular fever for much of my final Autumn term. I was more keen on all sport than the academic side although I was not popular with Mr Ireland ( of rock with Jock fame) for not being ...see more
I was born in Queenswood avenue and went to Collingwood girls school in 1953 which was then situated in Stanley Park road. The headmistress was Mrs Hollis and the discipline was very strict at that time but did me no harm at all and left me with happy memories apart from the school dinners which left me with a lifelong hatred of butter beans and blancmange! My dad had a butchers shop on The Chase, I loved to ...see more
Does anyone else remember a plane crashing into the tower of what I think was the Methodist church at the top of the High Street sometime in the 1950s? I vividly recall going up to see it with my mother when we lived in the town during the 1950s and early 60s and seeing the tailplane sticking out of the rubble of the spire at an acute angle against the sky. The story then was that the pilot ...see more
