There And Back
I remember staying at my Nan and Grandpa's house in Woolwich, we could actually look out of our bedroom window and see the ferries going back and forth. Most times we stayed we were allowed to ride the ferries back and forth sometimes up to 4 or 5 times. It was an experience I will always remember. No-one woried about you then, there was virtually no violence and cases of children going missing and the like were unheard of.
Seeing these pictures again brought back wonderful memories of days gone by that we will never have again, what a shame!

RE: RE: There And Back
I too remember the Woolwich ferries. We would get a 69 bus from Leyton (I suspect they might have been the trolley buses. Sometimes the pole would come away from the overhead line and the conductor would have to get off the bus and put it back onto the line overhead for us to continue our journey.)
When we got to the ferry we would also go back and forth for a few hours enjoying the thrill of those free rides - making out we were sailors at sea.
When we tired of this, we would ride over on the ferry one way and run or walk back under the tunnel. The hollow sound of our chatter and laughter resonating all along the tunnel. This occupied us for a long time before we travelled back to our home town after having a great time absolutely free, except for our bus fares. For a few hours we had been sailors at sea; explorers underground and cliff climbers as we used the stairs - not the lift - to get to street level. Good fun! It was safe for us to go around and Mum had time to herself with no bored children getting in her way.
