CHATTIN AND HORTON SHOPPING STORE
IWAS FIVE IN 1964 AND IN THE HIGH STREET WAS A LARGE SHOP CALLED CHATTIN AND HORTON. IT WAS A WONDERFUL SHOP ESPECIALLY AT CHRISTMAS TIME WHEN FATHER CHRISTMAS USED TO BE THERE WITH HIS SACK OF TOYS. YOU COULDN'T HELP YOURSELF IN THE SHOP YOU HAD TO ASK ASSISTANTS BEHIND THE COUNTER TO GET THINGS FOR YOU. DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER THIS SHOP?

RE: RE: CHATTIN AND HORTON SHOPPING STORE
In reply to Jackie Thompson's comment on Chattin & Horton, I too remember going into this store with my mom and grandmother when I was a child in the late fifties. It had long counters running down the length of the store on either side, I think it was mainly a haberdashery store, and was very much like 'Grace Brothers' in the comedy series 'Are you being served'. There weren't any cash registers and when you paid for your goods the assistant would put the money in a tube and send it through a pipe to the office I presume, and you would wait for your change to come back through the pipe? I also have fond memories of visiting Father Christmas there too. Jacqueline Heatley (nee Sheaf ) 22/11/07
