Nostalgic memories of Earby's local history

Share your own memories of Earby and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Very happy memories of playing here as a child. Used to play Pooh sticks when crossing the bridge over the beck just before the playground! Went back to the park three years ago and wish I hadn't as it is completely changed, like being somewhere else. This photo brought back all the memories flooding back. I looked up your company name after finding your postcard "Approaching Earby" in an old case of photos that belonged to my grandmother - wonderful to find all the old shots, thank you :)

I was born in Earby in April 1949 at 20 Grove St. This Grove St was the original Grove St. It was demolished, I don't know when, and a new Grove Street was built, again not sure when. My grandparents lived in Dale St, my Uncle Doug at 44 Shuttleworth St and my parents and two siblings lived at 13 Alderhill St, at the top. I have fond memories of Earby and the beck. My mother used to tell me every Christmas how I was born at ...see more
My husband Roy Webb was a policeman in Earby for 2 years before we emigrated to Australia in 1967. We lived at the police house next door to Sergeant and Mrs Bent. They had a son Robert (and a white poodle). Inspector Derek Hardy and his wife lived at the other side of the Police Station. Tim Gates was a policeman there and he and his wife Alma and their son Timothy lived in a new house a distance away from the police ...see more
Those were the days when we could go to the Waterfalls and play all day long without any fears. Paddle in Earby beck and catch tiddlers, play hide and seek beheind the Empire Picture house, go for bike rides to Malhem Tarn. Take the dogs for a walk up the Moors. Go thru the fileds towards Bristol Tractors, boys played soccer in those fields. Going to the Local farms and Haymaking , having ...see more
We were married in 1964 and in July we went on holiday, returning to floods which had just happened the day before. My parents' greengrocer's shop on Water Street was a mess and the cottage was even worse. The first thing we saw when we got off the bus by the Conservative Club was a huge pile of tar washed up from the roads. We stayed up Red Lion Street and our house had been washed through with the flood waters. What a ...see more
In 1970 my Grandparents (Mr & Mrs Harold Hall of Winnipeg, Canada) and I spent some time with my Grandmother's sister, Ethel Mills and her husband John. We had a family reunion and dinner in a restaurant.  About 20 relations attended.  I did not know anyone.  Would any one remember that visit and would they like to make contact with me?  I remember seeing a coal man in his costume bringing the ...see more
