Share your own memories of Gerrards Cross and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

In March 1940 we came to live in Gerrards Cross. The school which my parents chose for me was called "Oakend". in Orchehill Avenue, I think. Two ladies, Miss Hitchcock and Miss Salmon, owned the school and taught us, with the help of a younger Assistant teacher. One abiding memory is of the gravel covered play area, and the consequent grazed knees ! We went to a shared playing field for team ...see more
Does anyone remember the children's home in Packhorse Road called Crosfield House? I lived there from 1952 to 1965. I don't seem to be able to track down any photos of the home so if anyone has any or even remembers the place, would love to hear from you.
This is a photo full of memories for me, too. We lived in Tatling End (Brokengate Lane) from 1941 to 1954, so Gerrards Cross was more than familiar to me! In the photo on the right, you can see the garage/petrol station where I got my first holiday job in 1960, and my mum was an assistant in WH Smith's just opposite (on left in photo). I remember the 455 bus that we used, also the bus turnaround outside the ...see more
I visited this stately Church this year to see the gravestone of my biological mother. It was a humbling and wonderful moment to finally see something tangible of her having never had the chance to meet her, having been adopted at birth far far away in Sri Lanka.
I was one of the children who lived in the children's home called Crossfield House, from about 1959/60 to about 1965. My sister joined me a year or two after I went there to live, her name is Brenda. There were about 12 to 16 children that lived there. We had a matron and a house mother who looked after us and did a very good job to. I have some very fond memories of my time in that home and I would love to get in touch with any of the people who were there too.
Yes I remember The Packhorse too. I lived at Denham and had friends in Tatling End. Every now and then we would catch the 455 and get off at the Packhorse to go for a drink or walk up to the Picturehouse to see a film. We would usually go into Uxbridge to do this but ocassionally for a change go there. This would be between 1956 and 59. Very happy times - John Hawkins. ps - someone may remember me from that period.
Hi, I lived in Crossfield House from 1982 to 1983. I have a photo of it. If you want a copy please contact me. I am new to this site so will see how it works, but it is not possible to upload pics on here.
I was born in Gerrards Cross in 1943 and lived my young happy childhood days there. My father H. W. Payne ran a cycle shop at what was then 31, Station Parade. Many friends lived in the railway cottages near the rail station. A parade of shops now on this site and the village school pulled down long ago I suspect. The family left the area in the early 1950s. I last visited Gerrards Cross about three years ...see more

I loved this place. I lived in the children's home called Crosfield House and we would often be allowed out for a walk and we would go to this pond and just sit and chat. I would love to have a photo of that home but I do not think that there are any around. I have such fond memories of this place.
