Nostalgic memories of Hendon's local history

Share your own memories of Hendon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was baptised in this church and belonged to the Youth Club. The Vicar at that time, was Rev. Welch, and 'Doc' ran the Youth Club. After church on Sundays we all used to go into the pub for a shandy, including the verger. I have the photo above, on my wall here in my home in New Zealand....I noticed that some of the lovely buildings next to the church have been removed and the trees have gone.
My friend lived in the caretakers flat ,'Lingley', (not shown in photo). We used to go to the 'Tech Dances' which were held once a month in the winter months. We were all members of the Parish Youth Club, our summer evenings would be sometimes spent playing rounders in the park on Greyhound Hill, and a shandy in the Greyhound after. I married a New Zealander and moved to NZ, I have been back a few times.
My Saturday and school holiday job was working for the greengrocers, can't remember their name, next to ABC bread shop. Really nice people and gave me a life long understanding of quality fruit & veg. My bike was a new greengrocers gas pipe special with a flat frame on the front for orange boxes full of fruit & veg. Was young an fit then and used to ride very fast down the side ...see more
I was a victim of the Hendon bombing in 1941 aged 5. We used to live York Road with a lot of our uncles and aunts with the name of Long. We were made homeless through the bombing and put into the church hall on the Edgware Road as temporary accommodation, until other housing was found for us. We finished up at 37 Park Road. My sister and I went to Algernon Road School and then to Brent Secondary Modern. If anybody had the same experience, I would like to hear from them.
I was born at 19 Broomgrove Gardens, Edgware in 1933. Although the address was Edgware the closest railway station was Burnt Oak. I went to Staglane Primary school and the Headmistress' name was Miss Palmer. My dad worked at DeHavilands as a toolmaker and was involved with the manufacture of Dehaviland aircraft motors. I was with my dad when he heard on his crystal set that the war had started ...see more
Wow, these photographs bring back some great memories of Hendon & in particular 80a Vivian Avenue in early 1969. For a couple of months then, I stayed, with the help of a little tolerance on behalf of the guys I shared the flat with, above the dentist. The lad's were Phil, Trevor, John & Stevie. One of the girls who came by was Mel & I think it was her hamster who absconded sometimes. Usually, ...see more
I was born on Eaton Road, my parents were Phil and Elsie Meadows. We played in the bomb craters and our milk was delivered by horse and wagon. We moved to Mill Hill when we learned our houses were being torn down. My dad's whole family lived on this road - good old days.
I remember going to the Gaumont Saturday morning pictures. My mum also worked as an usherette in the evenings sometimes.
Well Richard, I see you live now in the Black block, in March 1966, my first born was conceived in the flat on the second floor of the White block next door!! Happy memories!!
Oh yes! I remember the town hall all right! I was 13 yrs old and a pupil at St. Marys, I was tagging along one lunchtime behind three somewhat more adventurous friends of mine and passing the town hall, when quite suddenly they produced fireworks (bangers in fact) and proceeded to run into the lobby of that building and "let them off" the resounding noise caused a number of people within the building to ...see more
