Henley Grammar School

My family moved to an old Baker's Shop, partially converted, called "Dunsden House" , Binfield Heath about 5 miles from Henley. I used the school bus, Butler's coaches of Henley to get to school. As a previous contributer has mentioned, we had to share our schooling with a School from Kensington. My class had lessons in the morning and sports or gardening in the afternoons. Under Mr. Le Beau, I think, we had a wonderful team of teachers. I had a very patient lady teacher who took English. My gardening education was from an equally experienced gardener. Through his efforts, I was able to augment the meagre rations at home and had a very productive vegetable garden. Also had rabbits and chicken. Our home adjoined a Chapel which was one of The Countess of Huntingdon's Connections! Next door to that was a lovely village store. I have been a Rotarian for many years since moving to Dorset and one of our members is related to the Henley Brewers called Brakspears, probably now part of Guiness! Major Saints' Days, we trooped down to St. Mary's Church, by Henley Bridge, over the Thames. Happy Days!

RE: RE: Henley Grammar School

I, too, used the same school coach (do you remember the old Dodge?) to get to school from Kidmore End. I remember the son of the Head of Dunsden School joining the bus there. Cannot think of his name at the moment. I was at HGS from 1938 to 1942, so you can gather I am pretty ancient now!

RE: RE: Henley Grammar School

Dear Hazel, how wonderful to read your comments. Of course I remember the old Dodge, as I mentioned it was Butler's Coaches. I have exchanged letters with David Stoddart - remember him walking up down the 'bus shouting his Labour comments? He is now Lord Stoddart of Swindon. Our M.P. lost his post to the Conservatives, but I heard from him last week. He too has been elevated to the Upper House - Lord Knight of Weymouth. I don't know if we are allowed to publish our E-Mail address- here goes -cowlease@btinternet.com. Hope it works! Clem

Good to hear from someone! Are you the Clement Dennis who was in the same form as myself and Len ( that's how we knew him!) Stoddart, Roy King, Bob Gunston, Pam Dance, Ann East, to name a few?
I lived in Swindon after I married, when he was our MP. I spoke to him one day, but he really didn't want to know.

Yes, indeed. Have had a most interesting life. Lost my dear wife Barbara nearly eight years ago. Retired to Swanage. Married daughter (52) moved down from Reading about 10 years ago, to look after us in our dotage.6 month's ago diagnosed terminal cancer of her lungs. Getting weaker each week. Don't know how I will be able to face loosing her. Clem
