My family all lived here in the 1911 Census. Alfred, Sarah and 11 children. When Alfred was killed down Eppleton Pit aged just 41, Sarah was left to bring up all the children on her own. They moved to 13 Summerson Street later which still stands. Has anyone any photos of 33 Downs Lane, or could tell me when it was demolished?

I was born at 20 Hutton Street, my dad had died 6 weeks before I was born. My grandparents, Isobel & Bob Delap, lived at 1 Downs Lane. I went to Eppleton School, I remember them days well. My friends; Norma Simpson, Florence Wilson, Laura Owens and myself got in trouble most mormings for giggling in assembly. I left Hetton in the 60's and moved to Notts area but still go back to Hetton to visit our Albie (Cullen).
Hello. I was born at Fence Houses, went to Hetton when I was 5 years old, left when I got married in 1953, to a chap from Easington Lane who was in the RAF. Lived in Jane Street, opposite the church and cricket field. Mother came from Houghton and when young worked in Doggarts, Dad was a coal miner and worked at Eppleton colliery, he came from Burnmoor, Fence Houses. Lots of fond memories from Hetton.
My grandma was a Bell before she married Harry Davison and eventually went to live in South Market Street. She, her parents and siblings had lived at 32 Caroline Street, until they all married. Lizzie Maddison (my great-aunt and grandma's sister), her husband Lindsay and her brother Alex then lived there after the death of their parents in the 1930s. One of my duties in the 1950s was to take flowers to put on ...see more
