Nostalgic memories of Kilburn's local history

Share your own memories of Kilburn and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

We lived in Palmerston Rd, Kilburn. My fondest memories of Grange Park were looking out of our kitchen window to see my mum walking home from work. Also I remember coming out of the 'Saturday morning pictures' in the summer and walking straight into the back entrance of the park where the tennis courts are. The earliest memory was leaving Kingsgate school to have lunch at home and then ...see more
Born of Irish immigrants in 1951, maiden name Power, I lived in Maygrove Rd and used to visit Timms sweet shop alot. I went to Kingsgate School and the Grange Park most lunch times, and every Sunday I had to attend mass at Quex Rd Church. My parents used to go to the Black Lion pub most Saturdays and my father used to also go to the North London pub. On Sunday evenings I used to go to the State ...see more
I was born in 1968 into the Bircham family - I am looking for my dad. My mum was Pauline Bircham (who passed away 20 years ago), her brothers were Gerald, Maurice and Peter, as well as a sister Pat. Is there anyone out there that could help me! - Dads family name is Noakes I believe!
In 1961/62 I used to have a Saturday job in Hardyments, on Kilburn High Road, a real old-fashioned store selling all sorts of china and hardware. The assistants had to wear a most unflattering blue wrap-around overall and we were strictly supervised by a lady called Miss Jennings who also took care of the cash which went up one of those chutes to the office above. People I ...see more
My family were one of the first to move into the Kilburn Square estate, in the early part of the 1970, and stayed until 1995. I went to school at Salisbury Road School, then South Kilburn High School. All the films I saw were at the State, and I wished I took more time looking at the detail of the inside of it. I used to drink in the Coopers pub on the High Road as it was famous for being the only ...see more
I lived in West Hampstead from 1960 to 1980. I used to love Kilburn High Road. I shopped there with my parents on a Saturday. We used to collect Green Shield Stamps from Sainsbury's shopping. There used to be a glass fronted shop in Kilburn Square where you could go and exchange them for gifts. I used to visit the State Cinema. In February 1975 I saw the movie "Slade In Flame" there starring my ...see more
Do you remember the organ that came up from the pit under the stage and had all the different coloured spotlights shone on it? I thought it was sheer magic! The front seats were chaeaper than the back ones - I think they were 1/9 a the back. I also used to go the Grange cinema and the Essoldo, all in Kilburn. The Queens was another one in Cricklewood Broadway. There was also a small independent cinema ...see more
I lived in Kilburn from 1936 to 1969. The Gaumont State cinema was part of my life as a teenager. It was one of a number of cinemas in the area at that time and every Saturday evening I would go to the 'pictures' at one of them with a group of friends. Often we would have to queue to get in and maybe stand for some time once we got in. We sat in the 1/6d seats. Films ran continuously in those days ...see more
I was 6 years old and we lived close to Gladstone Park where we children would  play the year round. I remember the pond, the swimming pool and the tennis courts. Then there was the scary steep hill where we played hide and seek. Our neighbours to one side were Andrew and David Robertson and an old couple on the other side who didn't like children very much and we were three, two sisters and a ...see more
I was born in 1956 in Albert Road, Kilburn and lived in the area until I was 15.  I remember the community as one that was very close knit, you would walk out of your door and say hello to everyone you passed, young or old.  My dad came from a large family (Holder) and we all lived within a very small radius.  I was privileged to have attended St John's primary school with the fantastic and eccentric Mr ...see more
