Nostalgic memories of Mitcham's local history

Share your own memories of Mitcham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

As a small child I remember going to Wilkies fish shop in Western Road and from the counter you could see into their living room at the back. They had a huge fish tank filled with bright coloured fish and I felt very priviledged when Mr & Mrs Wilkie let me go into their living room to see the tank. I can also recall a shop called (I think) Maidments? Again in Western Road, the owner used to make fruit lollies ...see more
My family lived in Gladstone Road, Micham opposite Terry Bull's coal yard and I can still hear the coal men calling "coal man, coal" as they left and returned to the yard. 'Uncle Terry' had a minor bird in his office, and boy did it know how to swear, 'Uncle Terry' was a lovely man and even bought us kids Christmas presents. On a Friday night the coalmen use to give me a ...see more
I also remember living in Mitcham, probably from 1972 for few years.
Great site, brings back a number of memories. I went to Bond Road School in 1962ish with my twin brother Robert. We left at about 1970 and went Alphea in Merton before going on to Pollards Hill High School. Mitcham has changed so much, who would believe that you can now buy a cup of tea out of the old toilets at Micham Fair Green. I can remember going to Galdstone Road Mission in Gladstone road before they pulled it down ...see more
Does anyone know the history of 42 St Marks Rd, Mitcham, Surrey please, or anyone known to Mitcham as Esmerelda?
Hi, what a good site, my dad worked for Willam Hampton whose yard was by the Star School. It is now a recycling centre, but the school looks just the same. I went to Bond Road School and remember playing football against the Star. We would spend our time at the swimming baths and the park at London Road. The flower displays always looked good, World Cup Willie was a special one. We would take a sack of rags to ...see more
Can anyone remember a farm "show" being held on Figgs Marsh? I think it would have been in the 50s, I remember there were cattle and bulls in pens and people being taught how to milk cows.
My sister Joyce (who is 13 years older than me) was a Mario Lanza fan. When the film The Student Prince was showing at The Majestic (she was 22) and took me along each day to see it so that the boys wouldn't chat her up or pester her.
I lived in Garrett Lane between 1949/1959. I had a newspaper round in Martins (they had a one legged budgie called Everest), and a Saturday job in Creedy's. I loved going to Smallwood Junior School, Mr Holland was my favourite teacher and my best friend lived in Rostella Road, Ann, whose mum had frequent migraines. I have very fond memories of racing my ball bearing scooter, playing "two balls" and skipping and ...see more
I was born in Mitcham in 1947 and have happy memories of growing up there. This picture is taken on London Road (the A217) from a spot between the Cricket Green and Fair Green. In those days, there was a small garage with a petrol pump actually on the pavement. Close to that, just behind where this photo was taken, was the telephone exchange. I still visit the area every now and then, but it has changed a great ...see more
