Share your own memories of Patricroft and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Hello, I'm trying to find information about my grandmother's grocers' shop. It was in Patricroft. Her name was Doris Beaver, but by the time she had the shop was married to Jonathan Hampson, who died in 1947. Does anyone remember the shop they had? She later took up with a man named James King (who I took as my grandfather) and left to run a similar shop in Todmorden around 1953.
I am told my Grandparents had a chip shop and green grocers in Patricroft. Possibly in the 1930's and 40's. My grandfather was called joseph and his wife possibly Emily. They had two sons Harry and much later Joe.They moved to Cheadle Heath Stockport in the forties and then back to Eccles area, when I dont know. His son Harry married and lived in Cheadle Heath also, and settled there. I never ...see more
I attended the radio college in John Dalton street, Manchester, and was very lucky to be given accommodation in Lincoln Street, with a Sid Donlan. That 12 months was probably the happiest in my life. I spent all my free time with Sid, the scout group, and youth club, where I met with some great people - all very kind. Sadly, I no longer remember their names, but if any of you remember me, please ...see more

I lived in the Baby Shop from about 1953 to 1962 with my parents Alfred & Joyce Howarth
I remember Mr & Mrs Warrington, (I lived with my aunt and uncle who still live opposite their house) they were a lovely couple. Mr Warrington always dapper in his blazer and Panama hat, puffing on his pipe, he always raised his hat if he saw somebody, and Jean, Mrs Warrington always wore a twin set and pearls. Such a lovely couple, was very sad when they died. I don't remember the Chinese laundry, long gone when I ...see more

I would love to know if anyone knew of the Balshaw family who I believe, from a Census I looked up, lived at 346 Liverpool Street, Barton-upon-Irwell.
My name was Mary Butterworth and I was born at 25 Egerton Street in Winton. I left Winton Senior School in 1946 and began work in a baby linin shop on Patricroft Bridge. The shop was called Turners, next door to Tatham's the leather shop, on the corner of Liverpool Road and Leigh Street. On the opposite corner was a plumbers and a cooked meat shop where people queued for tripe as rationing was still in ...see more
