St James' Church Kirk is a place of worship of very ancient origin.
Polar bears, brown bears and black bears were all kept in the same rather basic enclosure at the Flamingo Zoo Park at Kirby Misperton, between York and Malton, when this picture was taken.
Sandlea Park nestles in the centre of West Kirby, but the swings, see-saw and climbing frame have long gone, probably as a result of EU health and safety regulations.
Four hundred years later, it was here that John Kirby wrote his influential 'Suffolk Traveller'.
In common with so many towns on The Wirral, West Kirby is not enslaved to the usual High Street brand names and retains a remarkable measure of independence.
The castle is unusual in that it was built in the lower part of the village; it is now overlooked by the church at Kirby Hill.
Above them the newly built Royal Hotel (right) and Kirby's Hotel, erected to accommodate the growing number of visitors, dominate West Cliff.
It could be said that the modern history of Barrow-in-Furness began with the birth of the Furness Railway in 1846, when a line was opened from Kirky and Crooklands to Rampside and Barrow.
Kirby's Hotel was at the other end of the Royal Hotel, beyond that we can just see South Terrace.
