Nostalgic memories of Shirley's local history

Share your own memories of Shirley and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I lived in Shirley (Skelcher Rd) from about 1956 to 1959 and often played in Shirley Park. I remember one time on this roundabout I was set on by a group of older boys who spun me round at high speed. I lived in Fir Tree Gardens at top of Bridle Road, in the 60's. I remember walking down Bridle Road to the pond and fishing with our nets and jam jars but can't remember the name of the park the pond was in. Walking to Wickham Road shops at bottom of Bridle Road. Christine Cox
Hand some good discos and jumble sales in hall when I was a child, did tap dancing here and ballet too.

The river Cole would flood the back garden regularly. I also rememember the Co-op shops, butcher and grocery shop in Baldwins Lane and walking there regularly. Later my mother ...see more
I attended Shirley Baptist Church from around 1962 until about 1968.  I was about 11 when I started and 17 when I left to go to Yardley Wood Baptist Church. I found the church services boring and dull but I joined the Girls Brigade and got many badges and played the trumpet in the parades.  I also attended the youth club on Friday evenings.  But the best was the Sunday night youth group that took ...see more
