Nostalgic memories of Thornton Heath's local history

Share your own memories of Thornton Heath and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in Croydon in the mid 1950s and lived for while with my grandma in Ecclesbourne Road; the top end near where it joins Bensham Lane. There was a general store at the very top called Hart's. I know that when I was young there was a sweet factory around the corner in Bert Road but I can't remember what it was called. Can anyone help? Thank you, Julie
Hello, my name is John Taylor and I am researching for a book which features a man who worked as a paint sprayer in a vehicle repair garage in Thornton Heath after WW2, around 1948. Has anyone knowledge of a garage in the area at that time? Thank you John

They were owned by the Andrew Family who used to come around weekly to collect the rent, Dad became the handy man for Mr Andrew, his job was to carry out repairs to the flats, we lived there until just after Dunkirk, we then moved into a House at the top end of Ecclesbourne Rd, number 32.

I used to live in Fairlands Avenue and then moved to Thornton Road where my parents owned the sweet shop; for some reason known as "The White Shop", in the block just past St Judes Church, next to Ollingtons Butchers. I used to go to Saturday morning pictures at The Granada and then also went to Top Rank Saturday morning disco. Used to go in the Horseshoe Pub in Thornton Road and the seafood seller used to come round with the basket on weekends.
