Nostalgic memories of Brentwood's local history

Share your own memories of Brentwood and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My late mother-inlaw Gladys Ellison was Secretary in the administration at St Faiths until 1984 she started in about 1975? A school friend Jimmy Craske was also employed there. Gladys was a trained nurse at Whipps Cross Hospital in the mid 40s and told me of laying out bodies in the mortuary. I lived in Brentwood from 1957 until 1969 as a child and then as a married man.I lived in Woodman Road (145) and 4 Albert Street. My ...see more

My mum was a patient in Highwoods Hospital when it was used as a TB Sanatorium in the 1940s-1950s. Her name was Shirley Fennell and she was there at the age of 4/5 for around 18 months. I've always been fascinated about my mum's time there and I am currently researching more about the home for a novel. I would love to hear from anyone willing to share their memories of Highwoods ...see more
I remember this view like it was yesterday. It is looking east towards Wilsons Corner. On the right is the Arcade and on the left side of the Arcade is a shop called Sacks & Brendalls (might have been Sacks & Brendlaw..). Anyway, I bought a leather flying jacket in there during the late 1960's or early 1970's and guess what....I've still got it and still wear it....!! Well, they never go out of ...see more
I spent nine months at Highwood Hospital  between May and December 1951. I celebrated my 12th birthday in Poplars 3, a girls' ward almost at the end of the drive. I remember so many things about my time there I could almost write a book on it! Sister was Sister Thomas whom I worshipped, then there was Nurse Mac (Mahon) who was young and pretty, Staff Nurse Weller, quiet and efficient in an all-white uniform, and ...see more
I spent 18 months in Highwood from April 1951 - November 1952 and would love to hear from anyone who was there at the same time. I remember a ward orderly called Mrs Brown on Laurels 3+4 but can not recall any of the other boys names but would love to talk over old times with any one who was there at any time. After a lobectomy in London I made a full recovery and am still working part time at almost 75 years old. My phone no. is ..... 07919 587235

I was born in London in 1937 and moved to Days Lane, Pilgrims Hatch in that year,so all my childhood years were spent around the Pilgrims Hatch area. Dad was always sharp of the mark and a couple of steps ahead so foresaw the coming war and got his family out of Kilburn and harms way into the countryside, or so he thought. Just along a wooded Lane from us was Hatch Road and there stood a very large ...see more
Highwood Hospital, Brentwood TB hospital for children and teenagers. I was there aged 14 just, in 1953 to 1954, 13 months in all. Apart from the treatment we had a good time. Rowans 3 and 4 was my ward. The hospital staff were wonderful. Many friends, names forgotten apart from a few Carole Davis, Pauline Brice, Brian Andrews, Harry Coldrake, Tony Welland as well as a fantastic Nurse Lawless and Dr Bentley. ...see more
I believe I was sent to Brentwood following a stay in Hither Green Fever Hospital with whooping cough. I seem to have been in a ward named Poplars 3. I have two very strong memories of that stay. I was 5 years old. First, I was encased in a 'frame' which was made of metal but thickly padded, the padding encased in thick suede leather. It went around my head at forehead height; a long straight rod went down my back to ...see more
