Nostalgic memories of Failsworth's local history

Share your own memories of Failsworth and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I never actually lived in Failsworth, though I regularly passed through it when I lived nearby. I was born in the Clarksfield area of Oldham and moved to Chadderton when I was five years old. Since researching my roots over the last year or so I have acquired a sudden interest in Failsworth. Why? "Ancestry" sent me here! My GreatGrandfather was born and lived in Failsworth (mid-1800s) where he met and married my ...see more

Remember it well, fell off the rope swing and broke my wrist, didn't half smart but luckily us men are brave little soldiers and I only screamed a couple of times. Gone now though...

The fields and woods offered an adventure playground better that any I had known; so much green, so little noise... Unfortunately, the developers were still chipping away at this natural beauty and within ten years all the countrtryside had been replaced by more and more ...see more
My dad was a band leader at the Palais in Aston-under-Lyne. He played violin. He stood at the front of the stage, playing, for the dancers on Saturday nights. He used to take me and I sat on the stage all night watching. His name was George Eric Bailey.
By the way, my name then was Janis Furlong. I have a brother called Alan and some body may remember that my dad was an artist and used to hang all his work out on the walls on a Sunday :o)
We lived on Gas Street. My family name was Gilder and my parents names were Leonard and Olga nee Carless. My cousins Pamela (nee Gilder) and Gerry Lees still own the Gilders Fishing Tackle Shop in Failsworth. I remember going to the bonfires and all the kids collecting the spare wood and guarding it like crazy. My older brother is named Kerry and my older sister is called Karen. I am doing research for a ...see more
