Nostalgic memories of Hengoed's local history

Share your own memories of Hengoed and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I started at Hengoed infants/juniors in 1960. I really enjoyed going to that school because I found the teachers so encouraging. I recall the headmaster was Mr Owen or perhaps Owens. I got the cane from him once I think and no doubt well deserved. I remember playing up on the "pitch" during break times, usually marbles.....we all had big bags of them. :-). I lived in Hawthorn Ave at the top of the hill straight up ...see more

Hi I'm trying to find out any information at all that you might have. My Mother(born at Hengoed) was sadly put in a home in what I would presume to be 1965, the year of her birth as far as I'm aware she was Adopted in 1967 at the age of 2, her birth name was Avril Mandy Jones apparently and she is half cast/mixed race. I know little about it and I would be very grateful for any information that I receive, thanks
My grandma was from Hengoed but moved to the midlands as a teenager with her parents. We don't know a lot of her time in Hengoed apart from her having a lovely childhood. We were always lead to believe that she lived in Hengoed Garden Village but can find no reference to such place. We are talking many years ago (around 90). Was this part of Hengoed? Was it ever known as Hengoed Garden Village? I would really love to ...see more
I lived in Bryn Glas for ten years after passing the 11+ to go to Lewis School for girls. Memories - I have lots, and it is lovely to come back home. Sitting on the Graig counting the cars (and there weren't many), travelling up Tredomen hill towards Nelson. Really enjoyed the Boys Club on a Thursday night -sixpence to get in. I can remember driving in my father's car under the viaduct towards Maesycwmmer . ...see more
My most vivid memory of Hengoed Viaduct was when I travelled by train over the viaduct (Hengoed High Level) to Stoke on Trent in the summer of 1961. The whole family went and we stayed at my father's step-brother's home in Burton on Trent. That viaduct crossing on the train was absolutely breath taking when you looked down the valley and beyond. I have since ridden across ...see more
I lived in number 5 Hawthorn Ave from 1957 with my brother and 2 sisters, my name then was ENID PUGH. We moved to Myrtle Grove after many years. I went to Hengoed primary school then Bargod Grammar School. I remember going dancing to the boys' club in Ystrad Mynach. I left Hengoed to go nursing. I now live in Australia with my family. I am returning to Hengoed in June this year to visit after 40 years!!
I remember a Terry Carney living in Chapel Terrace, a curly headed boy with always a pleasant smile. I had a photo of him taken at Derwendeg school (a group photo) which I gave to a lady who was collecting memorabilia on Cefn Hengoed. My gran kept a small shop at 56 Gelligaer Road, and my uncle Bill 'Ginger' Williams worked in Penallta pit.
