Nostalgic memories of Loughton's local history

Share your own memories of Loughton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

We moved to Foxley Close in July 1968 from Manford Way, Chigwell, where we'd been living in a prefab for 4yrs. Moving to what was known then as a "double prefab" was definitely a move up for our family of 5. My parents, my brother (10yrs), me (8yrs) and our sister (6yrs). My dad had just returned from 6 months in Canada where he was working and my mum started working at Ozalid in Loughton. After my dad ...see more
Does anyone remember the mini-skirted art teacher, Sue Bennett and her huge mural from found china and glass?
We used to have regular dance nights but these were conducted with a record player playing 78's. I took a few of my records and one of the favourites was of Piano Red a boogie woogie pianist playing Red's Boogie. I have it now on my I Pod!! I played for the School football team around 1949-50. I had many friends at that time, but marriage and moving to Leighton Buzzard put paid to most of that and contacts were lost. I came back to the area 40 odd years ago and now run a website for the old boys/girls of Loughton School. Anyone interested in film of the last days of the ...see more
My sister was married here, now sadly both her and husband not with us anymore. I was a bridesmaid at the age of about 8 or 8, got a lovely photo somewhere. My parents are buried here, was there last weekend to tend the grave.
I remember the Debden and Loughton Rockers on motorbikes and Mods on scooters. They used to come to St Barnabas Youth Centre on Friday nights. Would love to know what became of Alan Flanges and his friends, David and Keith. Good lads enjoying their youth, never any trouble. Alan used to ride a scooter and motor bike.
I knew Mike. I used to go round his house and he would give me health foods and tell me how to stay healthy. I think he lived in Greenstead Road. He was a very nice man, very quiet but friendly. When he told me he was a barber I started to go to his shop in Forest Road. I remember he was blonde and very good looking, the shop started selling toiletries. I don't know what became of him after that. I never saw him or his family again. Nice memories of Loughton.
I am Sarah Charlton, the daughter of Rowland and Madge Charlton. My parents owned the newsagents shop, next door to the cinema. I lived there for the first six years of my life, until my father retired and we moved to Warwickshire. We had a lovely home behind the shop, with a long garden at the back. Every Sunday, my father would take me for walks in Epping Forest. I always tried to get into the shop and talk to ...see more
