Langdale House, Salford

I lived in Langdale House, Salford. It was a block of masonettes, there were two other blocks on the same road, Patterdale and Ennerdale. We lived on the 3rd floor, overlooking a small play park and a row of tiny one bedroomed bungalows. I went to Mount Carmel school, which was just near Boots The Chemist which was on a corner on Regent Road. We used to walk from Oldfield Road right up to the top of Regent Road to the market at Cross Lane. Regent Road was a very busy shopping area in the early 60's there was every type of shop. I can remember my mum buying loose butter at the butchers on Regent Road. I can remember Landies Department Store, where they had a payment system which was piped all around the store, the assistant would take your money and it would then somehow go through the pipes to a cashiers office in a kind of shuttle and then your receipt and change would be delivered back to the assistant in the same manner. On a Sunday morning we would go to Mass and after that our dad would take us to the swimming baths just off Regent Road, that was a real treat. Then it was home for a hearty breakfast. A new shopping area was built just near the masonettes off Regent Road, The Piazza, there was a chemist, newsagents, greengrocers, hairdressers, it was a real revelation. Sadly all that history has disappeared for a Sainsbury's Supermarket!

RE: RE: Langdale House, Salford

Hi Ann, I stumbled on this site and saw your letter, which brought back so many memories. I also went to Mount Carmel School and lived in the flats at the back of the school. The flats were called Croft House and overlooked Oldfield Rd. I was over that way a few years ago and was suprised to see my block of flats were still there. I was in Mount Carmel until approximately 1965 and then moved to the new Sacred Heart School just down the road.

Hi Ann As a child we used to live in Ladywell flats, I believe this was part of the same area. My mum was Barbara and she had a sister, Doreen. Her best friend Jean lived there too. I am pretty sure I went to Mount Carmel School as it rings so many bells, but will check with my mum tomorrow. Are the flats still there?

RE: RE: Langdale House, Salford

I lived at D21 Langdale House with my mum, dad and sister Julie and the baby Beverley born in June 1969, until February 1970 when we emigrated to Australia. I remember playing in the square with all the other kids off our flats, kick ball hide, football, tennis (after watching Wimbledon), my friends were Sandra Miller, Eileen Carr (who were much older than me), Elaine Titterington, Brenda Dyke, to name but a few. I went to Mount Carmel and left in 1965 to go to Sacred Heart. Gordon Leibrick was in my class at Mount Carmel, dont remember Ann though. I remember cutting through the bungalows to get home from the park near George Brown House and getting lots of grief from the pensioners who lived there!! We all used to meet up on the park, my friends were Marie Lindley, Gillian Richardson, Sheena Connolly, Janet Beaumont, Terry Hall, Tom Hampson, Steve Capps, to name but a few. I remember my sister Julie riding round the landing on her little scooter and putting Bev in my old dolls pram and wheeling her round the landing as well. When United won the European Cup in 1968 and when England won the World Cup in 1966 everyone was out on the landings cheering and singing. They were happy days and I was sorry to see the flats demolished but that is supposed to be progress!! When I left school I worked at David Browns just over the road from school so I didn't go very far to work. I used to go to Regent Road Baths and played all round that area as well.

RE: RE: Langdale House, Salford

Hi, just wondering if any of you could help me. My dad was born in Salford and so was my uncle and auntie. I'm not sure what part. I was wondering if by a very long chance if anybody might have known them? My father was William (Billy) Molloy, my uncle is John Molloy and my auntie was Elizabeth(Betty) Molloy. Their parents were Hilda and Francis Molloy. Any info would be great, no matter how small, if anyone can remember!!! Thanks guys, Liz.
