Bancroft, looking north.
Though not ideal, its replacement is at least in keeping with the character of Bancroft.
50 years later and Bancroft is on its way to becoming a busy shopping street.

William Ransom, born in 1826 in the house at the north end of Bancroft, studied at Isaac Brown's Quaker Academy at the Triangle, Hitchin.
Bancroft was said to be one of the most beautiful streets in England by the artist F L Griggs in the 1890s, and it still shows a certain charm.
Further down, towards Bancroft and Nightingale Road, the tannery and other industrial works poured their waste into the river.
One of the largest markets in the country, looking across to the church of St Peter Mancroft. one of the largest and most impressive parish churches in England.
Notice the archway to the right, it is almost identical to that at nearby Barcroft and probably the work of the same mason.
The great cathedral spire dominates the view, with the square block of the castle on the left and St Peter Mancroft's tower in between.
Between the Guildhall and St Peter Mancroft's church all the buildings on the right, except the Sir Garnet Wolseley pub, were demolished in the 1930s; the market was extended westwards to give the splendid
In the background is the soaring tower of the 15th-century 180ft long church of St Peter Mancroft, with its peal of twelve bells and concealed hammerbeam roof.
Over the main doorway, concealed by the garden wall, the owner's name, William Barcroft, and the date 1614 is inscribed.
