Worked in Control Centre for several years. Happy memories
TBB (tech block b) housed a large stores area in which I worked for about three years. I was on a two shift system earlies 0630hrs start and lates 1445hrs start. I worked in receipts which faced the Great South West Road. I worked with a senior man called John Jarvis, he was very pleasant and took time to explain things. There was usually a delivery of an engine from Treforest (engine overhaul ...see more
TBA (tech block a) was a very large building so much so that people often got lost. There were four hangars East West North and South. In each hangar there was a technicl control and documents office which was reached by steps. There were two large lifts half way down the building with two smaller ones at the front. Down the centre of the building was a huge workshop. One end dealt with fridge ...see more
I remember Comet House, Speedbird House, and Technical Block A. Later they were linked together by a walkway above ground level. The board room was originally in TBA but when Speedbird House was built it was moved to there. Freight Revenue was in Comet House as was Catering and Cargo. Also there was Pay Office which had a delivery of money robbed which was rumoured to have financed the Great ...see more
Hello. My father was Harold John (bob) Mann. He worked as an Air Traffic Controller in the Control Tower, in what was then Heston Airport ('Aerodrome'?). We lived at Heston, in Durham Avenue. We moved there before 1952 - I know that because my younger brother Ian was born in 1952, and I think I was just about to start school at 4 and a half.....( I was born 1948, so I hope that ...see more
I started work at Heathrow in Comet House by Hatton Cross. An RT bus went from Hounslow West to Hatton Cross. There was no railway station then. There was the Barclays bank and a large bus station in front. Champion spark plugs were opposite where the railway station now is. There was also Speedbird House and the wing hangar, where the 707's and VC10's were maintained. The dominant building ...see more
There are a few pics of airport hotels amongst the London pics (cos its London Airport!)
I remember walking through the tunnel. Having a picnic, and a pony ride. Standing by a removable, and feeling the 'prop wash, from a, Vickers Viscount on the hard standing. Happy days.
Yes, I remember the time the Trident crashed near the "Crooked Billet" pub. I was driving a 116 bus and was on the bus stand in Staines. The journey to Staines from Hounslow was uneventful. I had about 20 minutes before I was due to leave for my journey back to Hounslow. I left the stand at my allotted time and drove into the High Street and there I stopped. The traffic was horrendous. After some 30 ...see more
I suggest this photo was taken c.1954 as the Control Tower and Main Terminal buildings were complete and opened by the Queen in 1955. My first visit there as a planespotter was in 1961, by that time the airport was in full operation. Happy Days - open roof gardens for viewing, no terrorist threats and life was less stressful.
