Nostalgic memories of Oldham's local history

Share your own memories of Oldham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I used to live in Iris St with my grandma as both parents were dead. My father was killed in the war and my mother died when I was seven. When my gran died, when I was fourteen, I had to go to live with a aunt and uncle in London and lost touch with my school friends. My best friend was Kathleen Wolfenden.
My mum was born in Rock Street in 1921, her parents were Fred and Nellie Ashton. Although I was born in Oldham in 1946 we moved down south when I was about 2 or 3 because my Dad, a Wiltshire man, didn't want to live in Oldham. We used to visit my grandparents a couple of times a year until they passed away in the '60s and the whole environment was a complete contrast to my country life! I always say I had the best of both ...see more

My first job at 16 was working for Oldham Cleansing Dept, in the office. There was a man who gave me his handwritten reports every day. His job was to unclog the old tippler toilets outside peoples houses, this meant he had to hang in them and push so it would tipple. The paperwork was full of "marks" and they stunk, poor fella had been doing this for years and really earned his measly paycheck. At that time ...see more
Born in the front room on Belgrave Road in 1953, I have fond memories of visiting my grandad and grandma in their little house on Peel Street. A typical two up, two down. The front step would be pumiced bright yellow every morning and the house would smell of snuff. There was a long dark wool blanket hung behind the front door to keep the cold out, and pinned back in summer. In the back was a sink to wash ...see more

I left Robinhill Technical School in July 1954 and started work at Braddock and Bagshaw's Chemist at the bottom of the iron railings on Yorkshire Street. I worked there until January 1960 when I left to do my National service. While I was away (in Germany) the chemist's shop was closed and demolished. I only found out about this when I came home in 1962. I have very fond memories of the five and a ...see more
I was born in Oldham in 1946. Lived in Norfolk Street, Chadderton until 1953 then moved to the Isle of Wight. My mother, Marjorie Bolton, lived in Hollinwood and represented Oldham as Cotton Queen in the 1930's. Have always loved the smell, sounds and friendliness of the 'old' Oldham. My favourite memories were coming back to Oldham for Christmas, How sad I was when we had to leave. I just loved the dirty houses, ...see more
