Nostalgic memories of Oldham's local history

Share your own memories of Oldham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born at 102, 12th Avenue, Abbehills, my maiden name being O'Brien. I have very fond memories of my childhood and the freedom that we had to roam around the rolling hills and moors, Hartshead Pike etc. I was born in 1939, but my fondest memories were in the 50's. I went to Alexandra Park School and to Waterloo School (school dinners, yuk!) I worked at the Thornham mill in Royton. I met my husband-to-be, ...see more
Are there any photographs of John Street, Oldham? The house we are interested in was number 19, where the Curley family lived.
I was one of the last Grammar school girls before it turned comprehensive and became the Radclyffe School. The old school building has been knocked down now - does anyone have any photos of it?
I've been researching my family, the Booths, who lived in Oldham . I have found references to Roman Road Street Farm from 1710 to the 1890s. Does anyone know anything about this location? One reference in 1891 mentions that it was next door to Hollinwood Cemetery gardener's cottage.

But my detail is very sketchy, and I am the only surviving member of our family old enough to even know her name! She talked about going to school in the ...see more

I remember going to Oldham market and eating 'specials'. I remember going to Lord St Baths. I ...see more

I had relatives who lived in Oldham and we used to go on holiday there. They were such great times. We would set off early in the morning with a packed lunch and walk up the penines to Hartshead pike. We would go down the fout and through Sally's Hole. The address we stayed at was Twelfth Avenue, Abby Hills, Oldham. Try as I will, I cannot find any trace of this address. My uncle who was my mother's brother was ...see more
