Holiday Home For Under Privileged Children

My father died in 1961 when I was 9 years old. I was told by Notts. Social Services I needed a holiday and was shipped off to a children's home in Skegness for 3 weeks. I cried when I got on the bus and waved goodbye to my mum.
Although the people were very kind, I ticked off each day and could not wait to return home. I remember going to church on a Sunday and we had to wear brown coats and brown and yellow hats. I also went to the Cinema and remember a film with Hayley Mills and Berl Ives and the song Ugly Bugs Ball. We had teams and I was the captain. We had the nit nurse check our hair but when it was my turn, they just passed me on. We slept in a dormitary and took part in activities.
Does anyone know what happened to the place and where exactly in Skegness was it located as I would love to go back for old time's sake.

RE: RE: Holiday Home For Under Privileged Children

I too recall going there for three weeks, along with my younger brother. Two of our sisters went to the equivalent home for girls, somewhere else in Skeg. It was quite regimented. We were allotted a colour/number reference - I think I was Red 2. There something like 40 beds in the 'dorm' (ten for each colour). I think we didn't like it much; we weren't accustomed to being away from home. I recall Mam sending a parcel of goodies that cheered us up. We just wanted to go home, even though Nottingham Council had effectively funded an all-inclusive holiday. We were taken to a theatre, supposedly to see Bob Monkhouse but he wasn't there. Instead we saw a singer called Donald Peers (apparently he was famous but it didn't register with us primary age kids). I don't know where in Skeg it was - maybe a search of old phone books would reveal?
