Caption for Aberystwyth, The Beach 1899: Aberystwyth became a popular resort for the well-to-do, who came here to bathe and socialise from the late 18th century. Once the railway arrived in 1864, many more visitors came; a variety of activities was arranged for them, including bathing from the bathing machines in the middle of the picture, taking trips around the bay in the rowing or sailing boats, and being entertained at the top of Constitution Hill (in the background).

Does anyone remember Binky's Chinese laundry in South Road? I remember watching them washing the sheets by the geulan (spelling?) just by the river at the back of the shop.

I have a bookmark with this exact same photo that my Welsh pen friend sent me c.1960. (I'm in America.) It has several other pics of Aberystwyth, and says "BOOKMARK BY FIRTHS" at the bottom.
