More about this scene
The Town Hall was designed by Christopher Kempster, who was probably advised by Sir Christopher Wren, as Kempster was one of the masons he used in rebuilding London after the Great Fire of 1666. The Town Hall was built between 1678 and 1685 at a cost of £2,772. Stone plaques record its erection by the Corporation in 1677, a restoration in 1853, and further restoration by the Ministry of Works in the 1950s – at that time it was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Nowadays it is a museum. In this view the photographer was looking left into East St Helen Street and right into the start of the High Street.
