This view is not of the 15th-century bridge at Culham, but of the one on the road that crosses the Culham Cut, with Culham Lock a hundred yards behind the photographer. Culham Cut was dug in 1809 to cut off a winding section of the Thames as it passed Sutton Courtenay. In this view, a Salter's steamer, the 'Wargrave', heads for the lock, watched by sea cadets on their whaler the 'Firefly'. The lock keeper's cottage is not of 1809: it was, like many others, rebuilt by the Thames Conservancy, in this case in 1958.
