Abingdon, Market Place And Abbey Gate 1900

More about this scene
At the east side of the market place was the entrance to Abingdon Abbey. Its 15th- century gateway survives at the end of the short lane with St Nicholas's Church on the left, where monastic workers, market traders and travellers could worship. The house with a curved corner on the right was demolished in 1938 to widen Bridge Street. Waite's Printing Works on the left were replaced in the 1960s by an insipid neo-Georgian bank.
