More about this scene
This photograph was taken from the old bridge that led onto the island, and now leads to the Upper Reaches Hotel and its car park. The former abbey bakehouse is on the left, then the Checker with its 13th-century gabled chimney. The bakehouse/ granary is seen here as it was after its conversion to cottages in 1812, and before the serving of the 1944 dereliction order. The Friends of Abingdon Abbey then bought the cottages to add to the Checker and Long Gallery, which they purchased from the Borough Council. One of the cottages was converted to their offices.
