Abingdon, The Cosener's House From The River Thames 1893

More about this scene
Situated on the island between the river and the mill stream is the Cosenor's House, now mainly 18th- and 19th-century, but replacing a medieval building. The kitchener or cosenor was an important figure in the life of the abbey and in charge of its kitchens and commissariat. Since the Second World War the house has been much extended, and is used as a hostel and conference centre. Now entirely peaceful, the island once had two fulling mills between the house and the Abbey Mill out of view to the left (see photograph 77605).
