More about this scene
By the 1950s the Market Place had become a car park and the statue had gone. Everything from the left of the view as far right as the brick building with the dormer was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the deadly Bury Street shopping precinct, which opened in 1970. The building glimpsed to the left of centre with the white pediment and the tower is the old fire station built in 1922; the tower is its practice fire- fighting tower surmounted by a siren. It is now demolished, and its site is part of the shopping precinct.
