More about this scene
This tiny hamlet, almost unchanged today, is at one end of the parish of Abinger, which at nine miles is the longest in Surrey, but is never more than a mile in breadth. The remoteness of this area led to its being chosen as the location for the branch of the Royal Observatory responsible for carrying out magnetic observations. It was installed on a nearby hilltop in the year this picture was taken, before being transferred to Hartland in North Devon in 1955.
