By 1983 the church was plagued by dry rot. The decision was made to demolish the building and in its place build a multi-purpose church (in Hargreaves Street, see photograph A19722), and the demolition of the church began in June 1987. The impressive organ was rescued and re-housed in a museum in Lincoln; the site of the church became a car park.
