Addlestone From 1943 1962
A Memory of Addlestone.
I lived down Shakespeare road (#31) in Addlestone from 1943-1962; my parents lived there until 1984. The area was known as poets corner for all the four roads were named after poets (Shakespeare, Tennyson, Byron and Wordsworth). Can remember playing football in the park at the bottom of our road nightly having 11 aside games. Also going to the fair walking across the fields from Coxes Lock to the fairground. Used to go to the coffee shop near The Dukes Head in the evenings playing the duke box with music from Roy Orbinson and others. We would go into the Bon-Bon sweet shop and Jarmans near the bus stop by the chemist and across the road was Warwick newspaper shop.
On Saturdays we would catch the train to Putney to watch Fulham play with then Jonny Haynes, Graham Legget and other great players.
Went to St Thomas the Apostle school in Chertsey until 1959 and can remember teachers of Mr. Boland, Mrs Meany, Mr. Robinson and Miss Obrien along with Headmaster Mr. O’Riordan. We had four houses of Fisher, More, Campion and Southwell which all competed for points in both sports and academics.
Great school and teacher, shame it had to close.
