On the border between Dorset and Hampshire, Alderholt lies on the edge of the great medieval hunting ground of Cranborne Chase. In early hunting parlance a forest was a hunting ground in the exclusive possession of the monarch; a chase was the preserve of minor royalty, the nobility or a gentleman.
