Caption for Allington, Locks c1965: At this point the River Medway ceases to be tidal; the electrical sluice gates here, thirty feet wide and fifteen feet deep, are an essential part of the flood control scheme of the Medway Valley. Installed in 1930, they can discharge three million gallons of water a day and are operated by a switch. Locally-quarried stone was transported from here to London by barge as far back as Roman and Norman times.

Memories of Allington

I moved to 71 Hildenborough Crescent, Allington, Maidstone, Kent in 1973 aged 10 years old. In the nine years I lived there I saw many changes. Parts of Allington were still being built.
