More about this scene
Now at ground level, Frith's 1950's photographer looks along the Market Place past the left turn into Whielden Street towards the Market Hall, with the Crown Hotel on the left with its deep porch, now demolished for road improvements. Hidden from this view until 1939 by Church Alley's cottages, the superb Market Hall was built in 1682 by Sir William Drake of Shardeloes. Long a highway bottleneck, it survived 20th-century traffic pressures until the town's bypass was completed in the 1980s.
