More about this scene
Nestling just under the hills surrounding the North York Moors is the old settlement of Ampleforth, built around the early abbey of St Lawrence. Also in the village is St Hilda's Church, dating from the 12th century. The Benedictine abbey, a mile to the east of the village, is now a centre for education as Ampleforth College. Boys used to arrive on the railway located down Old Station Road behind the photographer. The village shop seen here dates from 1856.
