More about this scene
The road divides at this toll house, heading to Salisbury to the left and Ludgershall to the right. Trusts usually ran at a loss, but the Andover Turnpike Trust from Basingstoke to Lopcombe Corner was uniquely profitable thanks to Hampshire's stable and well-drained chalk. The turnpike closed in 1872, and the building came down in the 1930s.
