Andover Town Hockey Club
A Memory of Andover.
I remember arriving at Andover railway station in 1950 and asking how I could get to RAF Amport where I was to spend the next 18 months or so doing my National Service. Eventually an old pre-war coach turned up and we chugged our way through country lanes ocassionly stopping to drop off elderly ladies and waiting while the driver helped them carry their shopping into their houses.. Most weekends I played hockey for Andover Town and at that time the team consisted mainly of personnel from the various services stationed around the town. Our matches were played all over the County and beyond . I was usually picked up by someone with a car. often by a Colonel who drove like a maniac while chain smoking small cigars. I cannot remember exactly when or why but I remember parading through the town as part of a united service group.
