Ardwick Green Area History Project

A Memory of Ardwick.

I'm working on a Heritage Lottery funded project to find out what it used to be like to live, work, go out and grow up in the Ardwick Green area of Manchester in the 1930s - 1960s. If you have stories or photos to share then you are welcome to attend one of our tea parties at the St Thomas Centre (formally St Thomas Church), Ardwick Green North, Manchester, M12 6FZ. The tea parties are on Tue 13th January 2015, 2-5pm and Saturday 14th February 2015, 10:30 - 1:30.

We will also hold a celebration exhibition event in May / June.

To register your interest please contact Ali Crush, Tel: 0161 277 1022, alison.crush@gmcvo.org.uk or you can book on-line - http://www.gmcvo.org.uk/tea-parties-explore-ardwick-green-memories.

Many thanks,
Ali

I spent most school holidays at my Nana's in Ardwick Green. She lived at 26 Thirsk St in a maisonette.I think the building has since been re built. I remember the graveyard at St Thomas's Church me and my sister collected caterpillars from there and kept them in a match box. My Nana and Grandad were regulars at the Park Inn.Danny Riley was the landlord,my Nana played for the darts team she has a dartboard in the living room. She made sandwiches with sliced meat from the pork butchers near the Apollo.I got the Football Pink from there on a Saturday evening and also was an ABC minor.Pushed an old pram with washing to the launderette. Had fish and chips almost daily from Reids chippy near the Park Inn and whimberry pies from a bakers near Chantry Lane they were cheaper after 4pm.I just about remember the prefabs on Thirsk St .My Nana worked at Cantrell and Cochranes for a while. My Grandad worked at Osborne Garret and Neagle who I think made hairdressing products.I went to St Alyious church every other Sunday with my Grandad and his friend Jihnny Marley who always put a 5 pound note on the collection plate much to my Grandads annoyance.I remember the Gee family especially Pamela Gee. The Ockerby's and the Sadie family who lived in the tall houses. I spent many hours in Ardwick Green Park which I believed belonged to my Grandad as he was called Albert Green.I climbed on the bandstand and sat on the shiny rock.Sometimes we ventured further afield to Bungo Park there was a pub nearby which had a donkey in a stable round the back.I loved to stroke that donkey.I am now 59 and remember Ardwick Green fondly.
