More about this scene

Ye Olde Harrow Inn and the two- storey shops beyond went in the 1980s, but the tall three-storey brick building beyond of 1897 survives. Much beyond has also been replaced with 1980s work, while the old Odeon cinema, the blank wall in the distance, built in 1937, awaits demolition in 2000 for a Sainsbury's extension. More survives on the right as far as the middle distance, where the rear yard of Marks and Spencer's has punched a substantial hole in the street frontage.

Memories of Aylesbury, Cambridge Street c1955

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Aylesbury, Cambridge Street c.1955

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My husband, Roger Watts, and his family lived in Castle St and then Priory Cres, from the early 50's to the late 70's.The photo of Castle St. taken in 1955 would appear to have his mother or his older sister (Linda) standing outside their front door. Can anybody confirm this?
In the 1871 census records my Great, Great, Great Grandfather owned a grocery store in this street.  His name was Charles Whiskin and he lived here with his wife Susannah and Catherine, Edward and Ernest his children. Many other relatives lived here also along with a nurse maid and a chap called Henry Green who again worked in the shop.
