The Norman keep with its four corner turrets, similar to that at Rochester, was built between 1164 and 1170. Though it looks impressive, the keep is in fact only 35ft high, about a third of the height of those at fortresses like Scarborough and Richmond, and is nearly square at 69ft x 61ft.
