I was born in 1936 so I am probably one of the oldest people with fond memories of Barking. I first went to Gascoigne School and can remember having to practise wearing a gas mask during the war- horrible smelly rubbery things. Anyone remember the junction of Tanner St. and Church Street in Barking, .... on the corner was the Britannia pub? My nan, (Alice Snell) was born in the ironmonger's shop next door to the pub and her father ran the shop ... but was it in Tanner or Church Street?

I read about a contributor who went to Joyce Williams School of dance and memories came flooding back.
