Childhood Days

A Memory of Barking.

I was born in 1948 and lived inn Salisbury Avenue but moved to Bournemouth in 1963 I attended Eastbury Infants school followed on to Manor Junior and finally Park Modern .I remember playing in Barking Park and fishing for tiddlers in the lake The paddle boat was run by a Mr Whall . Is the swimming Pool still there? Every September was the carnival and fair .The Odeon was at the top of Salisbury Avenue and I use to go the Saturday morning film club .Worickers toy shop was a must for any child .I loved going to Blake's Market at Blake's Corner . I remember when Barking Station was rebuilt and was opened by the Queen I think it was 1960 . Another memory was playing down by the river at Thames View Estate in the old air raid shelters . I returned to Barking in 2009 the place has completely changed

Fishers shoe shop next door to Worrickers toy shop. The two bloke's that ran the shoe shop looked just like the Everly Brothers, black box jacket suits same DA hairstyles. I had to buy my shoes in Sammy Shcnidermans shoe shop. his shop was across the road next to the entrance to Blakes Market. Good old days they were then. Barking town centre is the pits.
Yes returned to Barking briefly back in 2009 , I could not believe how run down parts of it has become .
Don't think I will be coming back again.
But the years I had living there were just brilliant ,
