Never Go Back

A Memory of Barking.

Born 1946, Wilmington gdns. Memories abound of my sister as carnival queen, going to the fair and winning goldfish that always died. Fishing for tiddlers in the park. Even had a stranger help me to tell the time in the park, harmless but would be classed as something different now. I remember getting in to watch the football under the fencing. Mum and dad running the cubs and scouts and some wonderful old buildings. Would I go back? no, I just loved it all as it was with all its faults and friendly people.

Hi Mick, I was born in 1947 and lived in Barking until I married at the age of 21. We lived in Whiting Avenue opposite the Red Lion pub for a while then we moved to Upney. I have so many happy memories as a child and of growing up in and around Barking. I consider myself to have be very fortunate to have been born in the late forties and to have enjoyed the carefree and safe childhood that I had. Unlike today I am sorry to say. I have visited Barking once or twice in the last thirty years the last time was about three years ago and to be honest I thought it was horrible. I would not go back there if you paid me. Gascoigne Road,Thames View Estate what a dreadful crime ridden area it has become. Thank the good lord I can recall my lovely memories of such a wonderful town that Barking once was. RIP Barking.
