Appledore Avenue

A Memory of Barnehurst.

I lived at 99 Appledore Avenue, Barnehurst from 1956 - 1975. My school friends from Appledore were David and John Owen, Steve Beard and his lovely Jordy family, Christine , Jennifer and Alan Jones. My next door neighbours were Mrs Fullylove, Fred and Dot Cutts. I went to Barnehurst Primary and Junior School where Miss Cardy and Miss Mumford were the respective headmistresses. Mr Attwood who put on the Xmas plays was a great teacher and the gorgeous Miss Turner . Happy times in such a nice leafy neighbourhood.

I haven't been back for many years but remember as a 10 year old doing a milk round in Appledore, Beechcroft, Castleton, Downbank Edendale and Fairford Avenues for 5 shillings on a Saturday and 2/6d on a Sunday and then a Greengrocer round with Mr Harrington. Playing football & Cricket down at Barnehurst Golf course with all the local kids until it nearly got dark, playing on the swings and tennis courts near Parkside Avenue. Safe and happy times!

How we all grow up and move away and are danger of forgetting those early years and experiences which shape our futures. Thankyou Francis Frith for keeping those distant memories alive
