School Swimming Days At Martens Grove Crayford

A Memory of Barnehurst.

I went to Crayford County Modern Secondary school in Iron Mill Lane 1945 1950.
Now demolished I see!
Each week in summer our class walked from Iron Mill Lane to Martens Grove via Old Road, walking thro' the woodland of the Grove.
I remember my first dive off the high board seen in the picture.
I met my wife to be in Shenstone Park were we played football to impress the girls and tobogganing in the winter to enjoy ourselves. The girls would not come out in the snow.
I remember the V1 landing in Crayford High Street and the V2 in Bourne Road.
I was a choir boy in St Paulinus Church and a member of !st Crayford Cubs and Scouts were I learnt to play snooker at a very early age. Cubs were allowed to join at 6 years during WW2
I played Cricket for Crayford Town Cricket Club under Wilf Merry a groundsman on the field on Perry Street an great man to learn the game from.
Anybody remember me?

My Dad - Jack Evans was a founder member of the club and I used to go and help Wilf with his groundsman duties - mainly running around with his boxer Sandy and talking to Glad his lovely wife. Later I helped my Mum with the teas in the early seventies. (She also went to the Central School Iron Mill Lane at this time (Kathleen Mason) although she moved to Bexley Tech during the war. We went to see Wilf once he went to the Nevill Ground Tunbridge Wells to be groundsman for Kent. He was a great character and we loved travelling in his old Austin 7 which he had to start with a hand-crank!!! Linda Tucker
My brother John Vanderpump played for Crayford Town Cricket Club around 1950-53 until he did National Service in the RAF 1953-55 and possibly longer. I haven't managed to find anything about the club in that era. He was a pace bowler. Anyone got anything?
Interested to hear anything about Crayford Town CC from Linda Tucker or Brian Richardson or anyone else - thanks.
