More about this scene
The Customs and Shipping Offices on the corner of Station Stret opened in 1925. Members of ships' crews arriving in the docks in order to receive either their pay or an advance, had to sign on and off and have their books stamped here. The man on the ladder (left) is more than likely a lamplighter giving the gas lamp its 6-week maintenance check, cleaning the glasses and, if required, renewing the gas mantles.
